حافظ الحدیث، صاحب سنن ابو داؤد، حضرت سیدنا سلیمان بن اشعث سجستانی بصری المعروف امام ابو داؤد رحمۃ اللہ تعالی علیہ 202ھ کو سجستان (صوبہ سیستان) ایران میں پیدا ہوئے۔ آپ محدث، متقی، زاہد اور استاذ المحدثین تھے۔ علم حدیث کی طلب میں حجاز، عراق، خراسان، جزیرہ وغیرہ کا سفر فرمایا اور ہزاروں محدثین سے حدیث کی سماعت و روایت فرمائی۔ عمر بھر حدیث کا درس دیتے رہے اسی لیے آپ کے شاگردوں کی تعداد اس قدر زیادہ ہے کہ ان کا شمار انتہائی دشوار ہے۔ صحاح ستہ میں شامل سنن ابی داؤد آپ کی عالمگیر شہرت کا سبب ہے جس میں آپ نے پانچ لاکھ احادیث مبارکہ میں سے چن کر صرف چار ہزار آٹھ سو احادیث جمع فرمائیں ہیں۔ 16 شوال 275ھ کو بصرہ عراق میں وصال فرمایا۔ آپ کو امیر المؤمنین فی الحدیث حضرت سیدنا سفیان ثوری رحمۃ اللہ تعالی علیہ کے پہلو میں دفن کیا گیا۔ (سیر اعلام النبلاء، بستان المحدثین، تھذیب التھذیب، تذکرۃ الحفاظ)

Hafiz al-Hadith, Compiler of Sunan Abu Dawud, Sayyiduna Sulayman bin Ash’ath Sijistani Basri alias Imam Abu Dawud (Alayhir Rahmah) was born in 202 AH in Sijistan (Sistan Province) Iran. He was a hadith master, pious practicing scholar, devout worshiper, and teacher of hadith experts. He traveled to Hijaz, Iraq, Khorasan, etc. in search of knowledge of hadith and listened to and narrated hadith from thousands of hadith masters. He taught Hadith all his life, that is why the number of his students is so high that it is very difficult to count them. His compilation Sunan Abi Dawud, included in the Six Canonical Books of Hadith, is the reason for his universal fame, in which he selected and compiled only 4,800 hadiths from a collection of 500,000 hadiths. He passed away on 16 Shawwal 275 AH in Basra, Iraq, and was laid to rest beside Ameer al-Mu’mineen fil Hadith Sayyiduna Sufiyan al-Thawri (Alayhir Rahmah).
